Suzukii Trap® by Bioberica, the new attractant specifically designed against Drosophila Suzukii
BIOIBERICA’s plant physiology division has recently launched a new attractant specifically designed to protect strawberry, cherry and other berries from the fly pest: Drosophila Suzukii.
Drosophila suzukii is a highly invasive plague, endemic to Southeast Asia, that is currently expanding fastacross western countries such as the US, Canada, Mexico and several European nations. The prominent, saw-like ovipositor appendage of the female allows it to cut through the skin of unripe fruits and lay their eggs inside. When the pups hatch from the eggs and begin to feed on the fruits’ pulp they damage the fruit, thus putting at risk the crop’scommercial quality and production.
Suzukii Trap® ® is an attractant specifically designed for the capture of D. Suzukii-it is optimized for direct implementation, as it comes in ready-to-use traps or baitsthat utilize highly attractant, volatile compounds. The fly is strongly attracted to the trap and enters it through the holes. It cannot exit and drowns in the liquid inside.
The efficacy of Suzukii Trap® as compared to other attractants has been tested in cherry fields in South France by the Chambre d’Agriculture de Roussillon. These, and other results, were presented last year in the 7th International Cherry Symposium held in Plasencia (Extremadura, Spain),which was attended by scientists, experts and cherry crop specialists from several different production areas from all over the world.
The attractant has also been tested in Mexico, proving highly efficient in the capture of D. Suzukii.
The R&D plant physiology team is currently testing the efficacy of Suzukii Trap® for D. Suzukii control in a number of red fruit crops affected by that pest.
