The importance of calcium to the stability, structure and rigidity of the cell wall and membranes has been shown in several vegetable species, as it results in tissues that are firmer and more resistant (Ferguson and Drobak, 1988). In an open-air commercial tomato plantation fertigated with saline water (mean CE of the water used: 5.2 dS m-1), we studied the effect on the incidence of apical necrosis (blossom-end rot) and the nutritional state of the crop when calcium nitrate (CN) and AminoQuelant-Ca (AQ) were added to the irrigation solution .

This study evaluated the effect of different leaf treatments carried out with a compound of calcium with amino acids and a calcium chloride standard solution on the mineral content in leaves and fruits, and on several quality parameters. Increased calcium in the fruit was associated with increased hardness and reduced incidence of bitter pit.

Adding amino acids may allow plants to adapt to saline conditions. A protein enzyme hydrolysate was applied to young Reviga cultivar melon plants in saline conditions. This produced an increase in plant height, leaf area, etc., depending on the levels of salinity used and the quantity of amino acids applied.
