PLANT STRESS

Biotic factors

Tipos de estrés en los cultivos - Factores bióticos

INSECTS, NEMATODES, FUNGUS, BACTERIA, VIRUSES...

There are various groups of organisms that cause damage to plants. Undoubtedly, one of the most harmful is insects because they can come to represent real pests in the field.

The infestations of nematodes are an increasing problem due to the disappearance of conventional chemical disinfectants. These soil inhabitants attack the roots causing deformations and galls, but symptoms are extremely visible on the aerial parts of the plant: wilting, yellowing, loss of vigour, rotting.

Also of special note are infections caused by fungi, bacteria or viruses. The virulence of these infectious agents is determined, to a large extent, by the plant’s level of resistance and by the conditions in which it finds itself.

Production losses can be significant

Agricultural production losses caused by biotic factors are significant and represent a major challenge for agriculture. These factors include insects, nematodes, fungi, bacteria and viruses.

Insects damage plants by sucking sap, gnawing shoots, digging galleries and transmitting diseases. Nematode infestations attack the roots, causing deformations and galls that result in visible symptoms such as wilting and yellowing in the aboveground part of the plant.

Infections by fungi, bacteria and viruses can cause necrosis, rot and color changes in plants. These pathogenic organisms affect the health and vigor of crops, reducing their capacity for growth and production. The virulence of these infectious agents and the resistance of plants, together with environmental conditions, determine the magnitude of losses in agricultural production.
